Cruises in Hoi An

10 experiences Vietnam

Water defines Hoi An, and the boat changes with it. On the delta channels the local vessel is the basket boat, a round woven-bamboo tub paddled through the water-palm creeks of Cam Thanh. On the Thu Bon a wooden boat reaches the fishing villages, the potters and the carpenters. On the Hoai River in the old town, short rides carry lanterns out at night. Beyond the Cua Dai wharf the sea begins, and the Cham Islands lie across it: 50 minutes by traditional wooden boat, or 15 to 30 minutes by speedboat.

These are short day cruises, and none sleeps aboard. A private river tour of three and a half hours follows the lower Thu Bon with stops at Thanh Ha and Kim Bong, and a six-hour private day follows the old-town walk with a river leg to Thanh Nam. Basket-boat trips in Cam Thanh last three and a half to four hours, with lantern making or a cooking class; on the private day there it is two people to a basket, with life jackets. A seven-hour private afternoon links the Bay Mau coconut forest to a boat of ten to fifteen minutes on the Hoai River, where the lanterns go out at about 20:00. Cham Island days run four and a half to seven and a half hours, in a shared boat or on a private cruise with an underwater walk.

Practical. Island departures leave from the Cua Dai wharf, with hotel pickup between 7:30 and 8:00. Boats do not sail in rough weather, so the crossing can be cancelled or moved. River and basket-boat trips are sheltered and flat; the issue there is sun, and afternoons near 34C in June and July call for a hat and water. Swimwear is needed on the island days. The child rate applies only when a child shares with two paying adults. Most of these trips accept free cancellation a day ahead, and the island packages with a hotel stay ask for three days.
