Hungary's water experiences are mostly Danube-based, and the river deserves its reputation as the finest urban waterway in Central Europe. An evening cruise between Budapest's two banks — with the Parliament building lit above the Pest embankment and the Buda castle illuminated above its hill — is one of the great night views from any European river. Longer Danube cruises between Budapest and Bratislava or Vienna pass through the Danube Bend, where the river turns sharply between castle-topped hills that have defined this landscape since the Roman period. Lake Balaton in the west, the largest lake in Central Europe, offers sailing, ferry crossings between the north and south shores, and summer sunset boat tours across the volcanic Badacsony hills.
