Sightseeing in Capri

30 experiences Italy

Sightseeing in Capri follows two circuits, one on the hill and one on the water. The land day starts at Marina Grande, where a minibus climbs to Anacapri for Villa San Michele and the church of San Michele, whose majolica floor of 1761 is an Eden in tile, then drops to Capri town for Via Camerelle, the Gardens of Augustus and the Belvedere di Tragara over the Faraglioni. The water circuit passes the built landmarks instead: Monte Tiberio, where Tiberius completed Villa Jovis in AD 27; Villa Malaparte on Punta Massullo, begun in 1937 and best known from Godard's film Le Mépris; and the Punta Carena lighthouse, lit since 1867.

Capri sightseeing tours come in four shapes on land and one at sea. The guided day crosses by hydrofoil from Naples or Sorrento, takes the minibus to Anacapri and leaves free time in both towns; the hybrid pairs a two-hour shared boat with a hop-on, hop-off minibus pass and an optional chairlift. Walking tours with a local guide run five to six hours, and a private tour of four hours takes in the Belvedere di Tragara, Anacapri and Monte Solaro. The shape at sea is the boat lap of the island, in shared and private versions, and it accounts for most of the listings.

Practical. Capri's weather station records highs of 32C in August, 23-24C in May and October and 13-14C in January. Several operators meet at Bar La Vela on Marina Grande. The chairlift is usually extra, and some optional sites take cash only. Walking tours run in rain and include some uphill paths. Most listings cancel free until 24 hours before; a few private ones are final sale, and one asks for 20 days' notice.
