Self-Guided Tours in Oxford

Two different versions of Oxford come packaged into these walks. One is built for a first look at the city: Oxford Castle, the stalls of the Covered Market, the Ashmolean's galleries, a science museum tucked off Broad Street, and the university's own core at the Bodleian, Radcliffe Camera and Christ Church. The second skips landmark-spotting for a story, tracing a route past Magdalen College and the Playhouse to a blackboard still holding Einstein's chalked equations, then into the medieval reading room that played Hogwarts' library on screen.

Booking either one hands over an app rather than a guide. The castle-to-college route uses the World City Trail app: a ten-digit code unlocks GPS directions between stops, narration switches on for anyone who'd rather listen than read a screen, and the walk covers about two hours before ending wherever it happens to, not necessarily back at the first stop. The Einstein-and-library route runs through Questo instead, a shorter format under ninety minutes where each solved clue releases the next set of directions, and children play free.

Practical. Summer here runs a few degrees warmer than on the coast, July afternoons near 23C; January is the one to dress for, daytime readings closer to 5C with a biting edge that suits a coat more than an umbrella. College gates keep their own timetable and often charge for entry on top of it, so both walks are built to route around a locked one rather than depend on it staying open. Beyond a charged phone and a spare, dry hour, neither needs planning ahead.
