Self-Guided Tours in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's self-guided offer runs on two very different clocks, and both start in Sofia. A short puzzle walk works through the capital's own communist-era landmarks around St Nedelya Church. A much longer one leaves the city behind for the whole day, out to Plovdiv, where a Roman theatre still sits carved into a hill above one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited old towns. Nessebar's stone lanes on the Black Sea and Veliko Tarnovo's fortress above the Yantra gorge would suit the same self-paced format just as easily; neither has a self-guided route yet.

The gap between the two products is less about theme than about scale. Sofia's communist-history walk is a two-hour loop for a small group and one phone, clues carrying the pace rather than a guide. The Plovdiv trip runs to a full working day: a private car and driver from Sofia and back, with no guide, so the walking in Plovdiv's old town is yours to plan — and it is priced as a car for the day, not a city puzzle. Entrance fees there are paid on the spot.

Practical. Sofia turns properly cold from December through February, with snow on the ground for weeks, and climbs past 28C in July and August; spring and autumn suit the outdoor communist-history walk best. Plovdiv sits lower and runs a couple of degrees warmer than the capital in summer, and its old town hill means real climbing over uneven stone, so sturdy shoes earn their keep there more than on Sofia's flatter streets. Because a driver's schedule sets the Plovdiv day rather than an app, book it at least a day ahead rather than the same morning.
