Self-Guided Tours in Singapore
Singapore is small enough that a self-guided walk covers real ground rather than a slice of it: the colonial civic district around the Padang, the old godowns lining the Singapore River, and the newer skyline of Marina Bay all sit inside one downtown loop. Self-guided tours here run as phone games rather than printed maps, and the two built for the island differ less in geography than in story. One plays straight, a sightseeing thread through that same downtown core. The other turns the walk into a time-travel plot, jumping between the island's colonial past and its glassy present without ever leaving the centre.
Both are Questo app games: book, get an email with instructions, download the app, and start whenever suits, day or night, with no guide and no group to wait for. A puzzle solved at each stop releases directions to the next, and the provider suggests a ticket per player, though two people can easily share one phone. The plain sightseeing route is the shorter of the two, well under an hour; the time-travel story runs closer to ninety minutes and asks more patience with its plot. Either costs about what a hawker-centre meal would.
Practical. Singapore holds one climate all year: daytime highs of 31 to 33C, nights rarely under 23C, and humidity that makes both feel worse than the number suggests. A downpour can start with almost no warning most afternoons, heavy but usually brief, so mornings and early evenings beat midday heat and rain alike. Shade is scarce around the Padang and Marina Bay's open squares, so water matters more here than a spare battery. Nothing sells out, so the only real planning is picking a cooler hour.
