Which museum is which

Cairo's antiquities now sit in three separate places. Tours are sold under names that blur together, and people arrive at the wrong door. It is the most common booking mistake in the city.

• The Egyptian Museum, Tahrir. The Narmer Palette, the Tanis gold, the Old and Middle Kingdom halls.
• The Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza. Opened in November 2025, with all 5,398 Tutankhamun objects and Khufu's solar boats.
• The civilisation museum, Fustat. The twenty-two royal mummies, moved there in April 2021.

What is on Tahrir

The Tutankhamun rooms are gone, and what remains is broader and older. The Narmer Palette records the unification of Egypt. The Tanis treasure is gold from a later dynasty, and it rarely has a queue.

• Check the name. Read which museum your tour actually enters before booking. The three are half an hour apart.
• Time needed. Two hours with a guide covers the highlights. The labels are old and sparse, so a guide earns their fee here.
• Photography. A separate ticket, bought at the entrance.
• Combining. Tahrir pairs naturally with the Citadel and Coptic Cairo in one day.
• Comfort. The old building is not fully air-conditioned. Summer afternoons are heavy going.
