Self-Guided Tours in United Kingdom

Self-guided touring spreads well beyond London here. A highlights walk, the same idea everywhere, a loop stringing the main sights together with a puzzle at each stop, now covers London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Cambridge and Oxford. Above that sit routes unique to one city: Cambridge hides a Tudor-era plot smuggling forbidden books past the King's men through Trinity Hall and the Round Church; Glasgow's walk passes the Doulton Fountain and St Andrew's in the Square; Brighton runs a longer seafront mystery from the Theatre Royal to the Palace Pier, tangled up in a royal scandal and ABBA's 1974 Eurovision win at the Dome; Birmingham chases Victorian ghosts from New Street Station through a cellar where rioters once burned; and Letchworth, the world's first Garden City, gets a quieter puzzle walk past black squirrels and an oddly named pub, halfway between London and Cambridge.

Two formats run underneath all of it. The highlights walk is the cheaper option, ticket-and-GPS through the World City Trail app, two to three hours, priced close to a pub lunch. The themed quests, mostly Questo or a mobile access code, lean on a script instead: ghost hunts, romance trails, wartime spies, a stolen-book chase, an hour to well over two and costing a little more. Both need nothing but a charged phone.

Practical. London runs about 23C in July and 8C in January; Scotland and the north stay several degrees cooler and wetter in every month, so a route that's pleasant one week in the south can be a wet slog in Glasgow the same week. Ghost-themed walks are built for after dark, which in a British winter starts by four in the afternoon, so there's no need to wait for a late slot. None of it sells out; a dead phone is the real risk, so charge up first. Comfortable shoes matter more than the forecast; most loops run two to four miles on foot.
