Valletta's self-guided walks stay entirely inside the fortified peninsula, small enough that a phone can steer the whole route without a car or a bus. One leans toward the landmarks a first visit expects — the Triton Fountain by City Gate, Upper Barrakka Gardens over the Grand Harbour, St John's Co-Cathedral and Great Siege Square among the stops — while the other turns off the main streets toward Palazzo Parisio and the old Russian Cultural Centre, telling a story rather than naming sights.

Booking the landmarks walk means downloading the World City Trail app and typing in a ten-digit code; from there GPS does the steering, and a narrator can read each stop aloud for anyone who'd rather not stare at a phone. Two hours, roughly, and the finish line can be anywhere the walk happens to end, not necessarily City Gate. The story walk works differently: Questo sends directions only once a puzzle is solved, over about seventy-five minutes built on plot rather than sightseeing. Neither needs a guide, and both can be paused for as long as the day requires.

Practical. Valletta's bastions give almost no shade, and July and August afternoons here regularly pass 30C, so a start before ten in the morning suits either walk better than midday. Winters stay mild, January highs closer to 15C, which keeps both routes comfortable outside the summer crowds. The old city is largely flat but stepped at its edges, so closed shoes beat sandals on the limestone, and a charged phone matters more than anything else booked in advance.
