Sightseeing in Kuşadası, Turkey

Kusadasi is one of those rare places where the sightseeing almost feels unfair — the density of remarkable things to see within a short radius of the city center is simply extraordinary. The most iconic landmark in town is Pigeon Island Castle, a 14th-century Byzantine fortress sitting on a small rocky islet connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Originally built as a defense outpost, it later served as a hideout for the Barbarossa brothers, the most feared pirates of the Ottoman Mediterranean. Today it houses a small museum and offers panoramic views over the harbor that are difficult to match anywhere on the Aegean coast.

A short drive inland takes you to the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The marble-paved streets, monumental gateways, and a 25,000-seat theater are enough to make even the most seasoned traveler pause. Equally moving is the House of the Virgin Mary, perched in the pine-forested hills above Ephesus — a pilgrimage site for Christians and Muslims alike, visited by multiple popes and recognized by the Vatican.

Back in Kusadasi, the 17th-century Ottoman Caravanserai near the waterfront is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in western Turkey. Built in 1618, it once served as an inn and trading post for Silk Road merchants and today hosts open-air events within its original stone courtyard. Kusadasi rewards those who look beyond the beach — and there is a great deal to find.
