The chief entertainment of Crete is called the Cretan night and takes place in a village taverna rather than a hotel. The lyra plays — a three-stringed bowed instrument held on the knee — raki is poured, a meze of a dozen plates comes out, and by mid-evening the dancing begins. Cretans dance the pentozali and the syrtos for themselves rather than for guests, and by the end everyone is pulled into the circle.

The second line is for families. The Limnoupolis water park near Chania runs all day with transfers from the hotels. In Heraklion there is a 3D museum of the Minoan world and a cinema with moving seats, where the story of Knossos is told head-on. The Greek mythology park on the Lassithi plateau explains the gods through models and scenes — children take to it better than to museum labels.

The third is urban: quests through the old town of Chania, where the route is led by an app rather than a guide. Practical notes: the Cretan night ends around midnight and the return transfer is included, but with small children it is worth weighing. Raki is poured generously and refusing is thought impolite — say in advance if you are driving. Bring your own towel to the water park; the lockers are paid.
