The nature around Ayia Napa is concentrated in the water and in the rocks at its edge. East of town the coast is cut through with sea caves: waves have carved arches, grottoes and through-passages in the soft limestone, places a boat cannot enter but a kayak can. Paddling routes run along this stretch for two or three hours, with stops to slip inside and watch the light fall through the openings in the roof.

The second theme is what lies underwater. Two kilometres offshore is MUSAN, the underwater sculpture museum: some ninety figures at eight to ten metres, arranged so that a submerged forest forms between them. It can be seen with a mask — the depth allows it without tanks, though not everyone manages to dive down to the lower figures. Snorkelling safaris run separately along the bays of Cape Greco.

Practical notes. Kayaking and snorkelling depend on the wind: in a swell the caves are closed, the decision comes in the morning, and money is returned on cancellation. You must be able to swim; life jackets are given to all. Take waterproof sunscreen — a back burns faster underwater than it seems. The MUSAN sculptures must not be touched; it is a protected zone.
