Layover Tour in Cairo

A stopover in Cairo is a problem of distance before it is one of sights. The airport sits on the north-east edge of the city and the Giza plateau on the far side, 40 to 50 km apart: an hour each way in normal traffic, up to two at rush hour. That decides what fits. Four or five free hours mean the three pyramids, the Sphinx and Khafre's Valley Temple, and nothing else. Nine or ten hours either add Saqqara's Step Pyramid or turn the day towards the old city: Khan el-Khalili, the Citadel, the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir. That museum no longer holds Tutankhamun, whose collection moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum beside the plateau in November 2025.

The tours are private cars with a guide, picked up at the hotel, with most pickups falling between seven and eight in the morning. Only the airport layover tour meets you at the arrivals hall: four hours with an Egyptologist, transfer both ways included. By length the hotel formats split: half a day for the plateau, the museum or Khan el-Khalili; six hours for Islamic and Coptic Cairo or the Mokattam cave church; ten for Giza with Saqqara and Dahshur. A lighter slot fits a short Nile ride in a donut-shaped boat or a two-hour quad ride at the pyramids. Alexandria, Fayoum and Port Said leave the city altogether.

Practical. Traffic is the variable, so ask for a tour that ends well before you must be back at the airport; one jam can add an hour either way. Cairo reaches about 35C in July and 19C in January, with nights near 7C, so a summer midday on the plateau wants a hat, water and closed walking shoes. Carry your passport or a copy, and dress smart casual. The layover tour is free to cancel until 24 hours before; several city tours begin to charge about a month before the date.
