Layover Tour in Doha

A stopover in Doha is mostly a question of how far up the coast you want to go. From the terminal at Hamad International Airport (DOH), Souq Waqif is about 9 km by road, Katara 19, The Pearl 23 and Lusail 27. The cruise terminal on the Corniche is some 20 minutes from the airport by taxi. Four hours cover the souq, the Corniche, Katara and The Pearl, with West Bay and Lusail passed on the drive. Seven add the old port at Mina District, Lusail Marina and, from outside, the stadium that staged the 2022 World Cup final. At that length a layover has become a day in Doha.

Every tour here is private, with an English-speaking driver-guide: a car or minivan for up to six, a 4x4 for five on the desert runs. The layover tour in Doha is the one cut to a flight. It meets you at Hamad, runs four hours and returns you there, and the start time is agreed with the operator. A near-identical tour picks up at a hotel, the airport or the cruise terminal. The shore excursion follows the cruise season, November to April, and asks for the ship's name and arrival details. Another four-hour version drops Lusail for the canals of Qanat Quartier, where a copy of the Rialto Bridge crosses the water, and ends with a 30-minute dhow ride. The boat is shared with other tourists unless a private one is arranged. Desert safaris also leave from Doha, but they add a long drive south and fit a tight connection badly.

Practical. Entry depends on your passport, so confirm it before booking a tour on a connection. Entrance fees, meals and drinks are not included, and the full-day route photographs the National Museum of Qatar from outside, not within. Doha averages 23C by day in January and 42C in July, with nights near 32C. The cars are air-conditioned, but in summer every stop is a dash. Work back from your next departure and leave a margin: the four hours are only the tour, and immigration, bags and security come on top.
