Layover Tour in Egypt

A stopover in Egypt is set by two things: the airport you land at and the hours before the next flight. From Cairo, the Giza plateau is the default for a long layover. With a full day the pyramids pair with Saqqara, 27 km south-west, and Dahshur, about 40 km south, while Alexandria is a long haul of around 220 km and three hours each way. The country's other trick is the short domestic flight: Luxor, Aswan and Sharm el-Sheikh are an hour or so in the air from Cairo, which turns the Valley of the Kings, or the Blue Hole north of Dahab, into a day trip. A hard day, but possible.

Everything in this category is private: a car, a guide or driver, no waiting for a group to fill. It comes in three sizes. The short one is the airport layover tour, where an Egyptologist meets you outside the arrivals hall, drives you to Giza and back, and fits a four-hour window. The middle one is a day out of the hotel in Cairo or Giza, with the car arriving early in the morning. The long one starts with a flight: Luxor in a single day, leaving the hotel around 3:30 am and flying back near 22:00, or two days adding Aswan or a night in Luxor, with flights included on several. Siwa takes three days, and Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea, 120 km east of Cairo, is an overnight.

Practical. A visa is a separate matter and several of the longer tours name it as excluded, so settle it before a tight connection. Heat decides the Upper Egypt trips: Luxor passes 40C in summer while Cairo manages about 35C, so the one-day Luxor run is a winter plan. Guide tips are not in the price, and the layover tour leaves out the ticket for going inside a pyramid. Cancellation varies by tour: the layover is free until 24 hours before, while some day and multi-day tours start charging a percentage a month ahead.
