The Parthenon, the most well-known of the ancient structures still standing on the Acropolis of Athens, an old fortress perched on a rocky outcrop above the city, is one such structure. The Greek words "v" and "are the roots of the term "Acropolis." The origin of the word "Parthenon" comes from the Greek word parthénos (παρθένος), meaning "maiden, girl" as well as "virgin, an unmarried woman." Additionally, it has been hypothesized that the temple's name refers to the maidens (parthénoi), whose supreme sacrifice ensured the city's security. The Parthenon is a former temple on the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, honoring the goddess Athena, who was revered as the city's patroness. Construction work began in 447 BC when the Delian League was at its strongest. Now it is one of the primary sights to visit Athens - be sure not to miss it!
