Carpets have held a central place in Armenian culture since ancient times, with carpet weaving practiced in the country for thousands of years. Preserving this rich heritage, the Megerian family has been restoring old and producing new carpets for over four generations.
The factory was originally founded in 1917 in New York by an Armenian family fleeing the genocide. They recently returned to Armenia and are reviving the traditional production of the Armenian carpet, one of the oldest in the world, with its distinctive features. In the showroom, you will see copies of the oldest carpet in the world (the original is in the Hermitage Museum). You will also see original carpets aged 200-400 years, each with its unique history.
You can then participate in a lavash baking masterclass for an additional fee. Lavash is one of Armenia's most popular gastronomic icons, an integral part of Armenian cuisine. It is a traditionally soft, thin flatbread baked in a tandoor (a special oven). For centuries, lavash has been popular among all strata of Armenian society, appreciated for its unique taste and ability to keep well without losing its qualities.
In 2014, "The preparation, significance and appearance of traditional lavash bread as an expression of Armenian culture" was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. During this masterclass, you will observe and learn the millennial technique of lavash preparation. Armenian women will show you all the secrets and techniques of making this delicious traditional bread. And, of course, at the end you will taste the fruits of your labor.
