Itinerary

Piazzale Michelangelo. Piazzale Michelangelo offers the most breathtaking panoramic view of Florence. Located on a hill south of the Arno River, it overlooks the city’s skyline, with the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and Ponte Vecchio all in sight. At the center stands a bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David. A must-visit spot, especially at sunset, for unforgettable photos and views.

San Miniato al Monte. San Miniato al MonteSan Miniato al Monte is one of the most beautiful and historic churches in Florence, sitting on a hill just above the city. Built mainly between the 11th and 13th centuries, it is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, known for its elegant white-and-green marble façade. The church is dedicated to Saint Minias, a Christian martyr who, according to tradition, was executed during Roman times. Legend says he carried his own head up the hill where the church now stands.Inside, the church features stunning mosaics, marble floors, and a raised choir, along with a peaceful crypt believed to hold the saint’s relics. The golden mosaic in the apse depicting Jesus Christ is one of its most striking artworks.Because it sits high above the city, the terrace in front of the church offers one of the best panoramic views of Florence, often quieter than the nearby Piazzale Michelangelo.Today, San Miniato al Monte is still an active church where Benedictine monks celebrate Gregorian chant during evening services, adding to its peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.

Forte Belvedere. Forte di BelvedereForte di Belvedere is a large historic fortress in Florence, built in 1590 for the powerful Medici family. It was designed by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti to protect the city and the ruling family, especially the nearby Palazzo Pitti. The fortress sits on a hill above the Arno River and was part of Florence’s defensive system. Its thick walls, strategic position, and large terraces made it both a military stronghold and a safe refuge for the Medici rulers.Today, Forte Belvedere is known for its panoramic views of Florence and often hosts art exhibitions and cultural events. From its terraces, visitors can see famous landmarks like the Florence Cathedral and the historic city center.

Fontana delle Rampe del Poggi. The Fontana delle Rampe del Poggi is one of the most picturesque and monumental features of the Rampe del Poggi, located at the foot of the hill that leads to the famous Piazzale Michelangelo. It was designed in the second half of the 19th century by the architect and urban planner Giuseppe Poggi, who created the major urban redevelopment plan for Florence when the city became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy between 1865 and 1871. The Rampe were conceived as a monumental and scenic ascent connecting the Arno River to the new panoramic square on the hill. The fountain represents the decorative centerpiece of the complex. It features a large central basin surrounded by artificial grottoes, rock formations, and water features that evoke the atmosphere of Renaissance gardens. The composition is enriched by sculptural elements, including three bronze female figures representing water nymphs or aquatic deities. The overall effect is highly theatrical: water flows from the grottoes and terraces along the structure of the ramps, creating a visually striking and atmospheric pathway that naturally leads the eye upward toward Piazzale Michelangelo. After many years of neglect, the fountain and the entire Rampe complex were restored and returned to the city, once again becoming one of the most charming and photographed spots in the Oltrarno area.
