The protected small harbor of Portoč, the island’s accessibility and its abundance of fertile land on a large expanse of flatland led to land cultivation and the construction of a church with a monastery in the 11th century. The gardens of Lokrum on the protected and sunny plain were thus established many centuries ago. Records from the 15th century state that the Benedictine monastery’s estates on Lokrum were superbly landscaped and cultivated. The monastery was known for its cultivated plants and herbs as well as good wine and beautiful gardens. Lokrum Island is a favorite place cut by local and foreign tourists during the summer. On the island there is a castle from the Maximilian period, the remains of a Benedictine monastery and fortifications. You can walk along the beaten paths throughout the island enjoying its nature, various herbs and peacocks that will welcome you every step of the way. On the rocky beaches there are secluded places for swimming and in the heart of Lokrum, there is the Dead Sea where children swim most often. The throne used in the film “Game of Thrones” was also placed on the island.
