Šibenik is the oldest native Croatian settlement of the Adriatic Sea, and it has seen Venetian, Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslavian and, finally, Croatian rule. Being a frontier of the western civilization and Christianity, it played an important role in Venetian-Turkish wars, and this period has left 4 beautiful fortresses, St. Michael, St. John, Šubićaevac and St. Nicholas.
