You will walk around Jardim do Príncipe Real, also known as Jardim França Borges. It is a garden that was built in the middle of the 19th century, designed according to the romantic English taste and organized around a large octagonal lake with a fountain. To you, it will appear as a quiet oasis with a calm atmosphere in the middle of the busy Príncipe Real neighborhood, and the garden features the famous cedro-do-Buçaco tree with branches stretching over 20 meters in diameter. The guide will also take you to Jardim Botânico, one of the richest gardens in the city and the perfect place to walk in the shade of lush greenery and learn about plants. Located right next to the National Museum of Natural History and Science, the garden features a variety of plants, some endemic, some very exotic. There, you will see the trees from all over the world, including New Zealand, Japan and South America, strolling past tall palm trees and pines that will provide plenty of shade, as well as bamboo, laurels and dragon trees that will please you with a picturesque view. In case you get tired, you will be able to rest on one of the park's benches and appreciate the view of the little ponds and streams. Even though the Príncipe Real neighborhood is a busy area, the Botanical Garden is secluded from all the traffic outside, and the garden provides a peaceful, serene atmosphere. Originally designed for botanical teaching and research in the Polytechnic School of Lisbon, it has developed since 1873. Jardim Botânico's primary goal is to educate and it was mainly designed for the students of the Faculty of Science to conduct research. Still, it is open to anyone who is interested in botany or just wants to walk around the beautiful nature. As an additional option, you will also have the chance to visit the National Museum of Natural History and Science. Located in the historic building of the Polytechnic School, it has remarkable collections, which have been gathered for over 250 years. The museum supports research and teaching in the fields of zoology, anthropology, botany, mineralogy, geology and other natural sciences.
