Itinerary
Avukana Buddha Statue. Stand in awe before one of Sri Lanka’s greatest artistic achievements. Carved out of a single massive granite rock face during the 5th century under the reign of King Dhatusena, this breathtaking 12-meter (40-foot) standing Buddha statue displays flawless ancient craftsmanship and architectural perfection that has survived for over 1,500 years.
Ruwanwelisaya. Visit the majestic Ruwanwelisaya, a hemispherical stupa built by King Dutugemunu in 140 BC. Known as one of the world's tallest ancient monuments, this sacred white dome is surrounded by an iconic wall of sculpted elephants and holds a deep spiritual significance, enshrining a large collection of relics of the Buddha.
Sri Maha Bodhi Temple. Pay your respects at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a recorded history. Grown from a sapling of the historical Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, this sacred site has been guarded continuously by devoted monks for over 2,300 years.
Jethawanaramaya. Marvel at the grand Jethawanaramaya, which stood as the third-tallest structure in the ancient world, surpassed only by the Pyramids of Giza. Built by King Mahasena, this colossal brick stupa represents an extraordinary feat of ancient engineering and remains a profound symbol of Anuradhapura's monastic power.
Dagoba of Thuparama. Discover Thuparamaya, the very first Buddhist temple built in Sri Lanka following the introduction of Buddhism to the island. Constructed by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC, this beautiful bell-shaped stupa enshrines the sacred right collarbone relic of the Buddha.
Mirisawetiya Stupa. Explore the grand Mirisawetiya Stupa, built by King Dutugemunu after his victory in battle. According to ancient lore, the King placed his sceptre—which contained a sacred relic of the Buddha—into the ground here, and it became so powerfully fused to the earth that the stupa had to be built over it.
Twin Baths (Kuttam Pokuna). Admire the brilliant hydrological engineering of Kuttam Pokuna, a pair of beautifully preserved bathing tanks used by the monks of the Abhayagiri monastery. The sophisticated underground water filtering and pressure systems showcase the incredible artistic and practical talents of ancient Sri Lankan civilization.
Moonstone (Sandakada Pahana). Examine the intricate, masterfully carved Sandakada Pahana (Moonstone) at the threshold of the ancient ruins. Your guide will explain the beautiful symbolic meaning behind the carved animals (elephants, horses, lions, and bulls) and lotus petals, which represent the spiritual journey through life to Nirvana.
Ayurvedic and Herbal Spice Garden. Take a relaxing sensory break during your drive. Enjoy a guided walk through a lush herbal garden to see how world-renowned spices like pure cinnamon, vanilla, and cardamom are grown, discover ancient traditional Ayurvedic medicine secrets, and sip a warm cup of local herbal tea.
Handmade Jewelry and Gem Museum. Take a fascinating break to discover why Sri Lanka is celebrated globally as the "Island of Gems." Learn about eco-friendly mining techniques used to find rare stones like the Ceylon Blue Sapphire, watch master local artisans cut and polish raw gems, and browse a certified collection of handmade jewelry.
Wood Carvings Workshop. Witness the vibrant heritage of Sri Lankan wood carving. Watch multi-generational local craftsmen use hand tools to transform raw blocks of ebony, teak, and mahogany into intricate sculptures and colorful traditional dance masks, learning how natural plant dyes are used for paint.
