The entrance to the refuge is about one kilometer from the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The lower part is drier, with few epiphytes, but the upper part is a cloud forest. Although the forest is not as clear as Monteverde, the most beautiful birds are much easier to see. The refuge is especially good for the magnificent quetzal, the most popular. After the cloud forest birds, the Sanctuary is also a good place to find the killdeer toucan, the lesser moth, the orange-bellied trogon and the three-toed sloth, as well as monkeys.
