Cloud forests are found in tropical regions where clouds crisscross mountain ranges. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is located on the Tilaran mountain range in northern Costa Rica at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level on the continental divide, on the border of the provinces of Puntarenas, Guanacaste and Alajuela. Immersion in the clouds for long periods of time shapes the architecture and species composition of the cloud forest, which is characterized by lush evergreen vegetation and rich biodiversity.
