The city is located on the same site as the Roman settlement Juvavum. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Bishop Rupert founded the city anew in 696. Salzburg's contemporary face is characterized by Baroque architectural masterpieces developed in the 17th and 18th century. Today, over one hundred churches, castles and palaces bear witness to the wealth and power of the Salzburg archbishops.
