Please note: minimum age to participate is 12 years old. The trip from Stanford to the entrance of the Walker Bay reserve can get quite bumpy. The tour is done in a 1989 Land Rover Defender (no air-conditioning). Weather can play a role in the itinerary. Please be flexible and understanding. The hike along the beach can be done barefoot.
Our guide will you up at your chosen location in Hermanus at the start of the tour. Then you will take the 30-minute drive through to Stanford. A really picturesque drive as the Kleinrivier Mountain range looms over you as the vast expanse of the estuary stretches for miles along the coastline. Our first stop is in the quaint village of Stanford, where we spend some time exploring the area.
The tour continues with an 'African massage'. And before you get all excited, don't. The sand road from Stanford to the entrance of the Walker Bay Reserve is full of ridges and is super bumpy. Once we reach the entrance to this spectacular coastal reserve, we will spend about 1.5 hours meandering through the area in our trusty Land Rover Defender. You will get to see a multitude of indigenous fauna and flora that include lowland coastal fynbos, blombos and sour fig. Most of the animals are very shy. However, you may get lucky and get to see duiker, bush buck and the Cape Clawless Otter.
We arrive at a spot on the beach called 'Die Plaat'. One of the most beautiful spots in Hermanus. Characterized by massive coastal dunes, unspoiled beach, rocky limestone crags and the occasional Southern Right Whale. It is here that we will spend some time relaxing and enjoying a scrumptious lunch on the beach.
The final part of the tour sees you losing your shoes and heading off on a 6-km hike along the deserted beach. The hike usually takes between 2 and 3 hours, depending on what is to be seen. In the months from July to November, keep a lookout for the Southern Right Whales that migrate to Hermanus every year from Antarctica.
We finish the hike at 'Dutchies'. A local beachfront restaurant where we can celebrate an awesome day with a locally crafted beer or wine.
