Classic tour to the national park Altyn-Emel, to the famous Singing Barkhan. Singing dune is a sand dune about 100 meters high and 3 km long.
Route: Almaty - Shelek - Baiseit - Nura - Kokpek pass - fork to Narynkol - Toraigyr pass.
Program:
- Departure from Almaty early in the morning. Transfer to Charyn canyon 3 hours
- Walk along the canyon, about 2-2,5 hours.
- Return to Almaty - about 3 hours including stops.
- Stop for lunch on the way to the canyon or back (self-paid).
The barchan is called "singing" because of the deep vibrating hum coming from it at times, remotely resembling the sound of a passing airplane or the sound of an organ. Songs of the singing barchan can be heard even several kilometers away. Legends of the local people say that the great Genghis Khan and his loyal warriors are buried under the sands of the barchan, and the sand sings when the soul of the Khan "exhausted from mental anguish, tells his descendants about his exploits".
Even whole herds of wild gazelles and kulans can be encountered on this long auto tour.
