Nice's self-guided routes work two very different stretches: the tight grid of the Old Town around Cathedrale Sainte-Reparate and the market stalls of Cours Saleya, and the long curve of the Promenade des Anglais facing the sea. The ghost-themed puzzle walk uses that second setting for its story, since Nice's mild winters really did draw a run of writers and artists to the Riviera over the past two centuries — Nietzsche, Matisse and Oscar Wilde among them — and the game imagines their ghosts meeting again near the Monument Centenaire on the seafront. The Old Town side stays plainer: Place Garibaldi, the Opera and the Fountain of the Sun, streets narrow enough to stay shaded even at midday.

A couple of games split the city that way. The World City Trail hunt covers the Old Town and its surroundings in about three hours, ten-plus stops bought as a code, the app tracking the route with a voice option for anyone who'd rather listen than read. The Ghost Walk runs shorter, around eighty minutes across twelve real locations from the Promenade des Anglais into the Old Town, with a cast of historical figures narrating instead of a straight fact sheet, and one device covering up to three players before extra tickets are needed. Both start whenever you buy in, with no fixed group size or guide.

Practical. Nice keeps a milder Mediterranean climate than most of France — summer afternoons average around 27C with low humidity, and winter rarely drops under 8C, which is exactly why the Riviera drew so many writers in the first place. The Promenade des Anglais has almost no shade, so the Ghost Walk is more comfortable in late afternoon than at noon. The Cours Saleya flower and food market runs mornings only and closes on Mondays, which changes what the Old Town route passes depending on the day. Beach season from June to September fills the seafront path fastest.
