Self-guided walking games reach a long list of French cities — Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Strasbourg, Toulouse, Nantes, Dijon and a dozen more each have a walking game through their old centre. On top of the plain city hunts sits a layer of story-driven quests: ghosts along the Riviera in Nice, a Revolution-era mystery through Bordeaux's UNESCO port, Edith Piaf's life told across Pigalle and Montmartre, and a Benedictine monk's search for enlightenment inside the abbey at Mont Saint-Michel. La Rochelle's Old Port and its maritime history get their own puzzle trail too, tucked among the bigger cities.
The plain scavenger hunts all work the same way — a ticket code, GPS routing between ten-plus stops, optional narration, two to three hours with no guide. The story quests differ mainly in mood and pace: Nice's ghost walk casts seven historical figures as guides along the Promenade des Anglais, Bordeaux's mystery runs twelve chapters with headphone-only narration, and a separate Paris quest needs no internet connection at all, built to work offline from bridge to bridge along the Seine. Some routes specify where to start — Carcassonne's hunt can run from the lower town up to the citadel or backwards — while most start wherever you like.
Practical. France splits climate by region more than the whole country moving together: Mediterranean cities — Nice, Marseille, Montpellier — stay hot and dry through summer, often past 29C, while Paris and the north run milder, closer to 25C, with more rain across the year. Story quests with audio narration are worth a set of headphones and a charged phone, since battery drains faster with sound running continuously. Games built around after-dark themes work better started in late afternoon so the ending lands after sunset. July and August fill the coastal cities fastest, while Paris and the north stay busier with weekend day-trippers than with a single peak season.
