Geghard Monastery

Geghard is a monastery half cut into the rock of the Azat gorge, about 40 km east of Yerevan. Geghardavank means monastery of the spear, after the lance said to have pierced Christ. That relic is now kept at Etchmiadzin.

Built and carved

The main church, Katoghike, was built in 1215. The rock-cut churches behind it date from the 1240s to the 1280s. The monastery has been on the UNESCO list since 2000.

• Avazan. A rock-cut church with a spring inside the rock.
• Upper Zhamatun. A rock-cut hall with striking acoustics.
• Khachkars. Cross-stones set into walls and cliff face across the complex.

How a visit runs

The monastery takes one to two hours. It is usually paired with Garni. A half-day from Yerevan covers both, and longer days add Khor Virap, Lake Sevan or a lavash class.

Practical

• Entry. Free, with voluntary donations. Garni and other stops in a combined day charge.
• Dress. Cover shoulders and knees, and carry a scarf if you are a woman.
• Weather. The site stands at about 1,650 m, well above Yerevan, where July passes 35C. Winter days sit around freezing.
• Timing. Morning is quieter and cooler.
• Photos. Allowed inside, without flash.
