Munich's old town centres on Marienplatz, where the Rathaus glockenspiel performs daily, but the three self-guided walks fan out from there in different directions. One heads toward the grand Baroque axis of Königsplatz, Karolinenplatz and Odeonsplatz before circling back past the Frauenkirche's twin onion domes and the Asamkirche's cramped Rococo interior. Another stays close to the market and beer-hall core: Viktualienmarkt's stalls and chestnut-shaded beer garden, the Hofbräuhaus, and breweries — Hacker-Pschorr, Schneider Weisse — that still brew under the 1516 Reinheitsgebot purity law. St Michael's church anchors a third stretch of the centre that the walks cross on the way between the two.

None of the three games shares a rulebook. The sightseeing hunt redeems a ten-digit code inside the World City Trail app, then leaves GPS to do the routing, stop after stop, for close to three hours taken slowly. The brewery adventure uses the Questo app instead, structured as eleven scripted chapters rather than a free walk — closer to ninety minutes, and built around solving a family mystery rather than ticking off landmarks. The Explorial-app version drops both the code and the plot for a live map with the stops already pinned and a score that turns the walk into a race between however many are playing, at around two hours.

Practical. Munich sees July highs near 24C and January closer to 1C, with sudden summer thunderstorms rolling in from the Alps often enough to check the forecast before a three-hour walk. The old town's cobblestones are hard on prams and wheeled luggage, worth remembering before the sightseeing hunt's longer loop. An MVV day ticket covers the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses, though the whole route sits within walking distance of Marienplatz and rarely needs it. Weekday mornings avoid the worst of the Viktualienmarkt crowds, useful for photos wherever the routes cross it.
