Salzburg's old town sits tight enough that both games cover much the same ground: Mirabell Palace and its gardens on one bank of the Salzach, Mozart's birthplace and the Residenzplatz on the other, with Salzburg Cathedral and the hilltop Fortress Hohensalzburg visible from most of the route. The Sound of Music adds a second layer most European old towns don't have — several of its real filming locations, including the Do-Re-Mi steps, sit inside the same UNESCO World Heritage centre the sightseeing hunt already covers.
One game is a straightforward sightseeing loop: buy it, punch a ten-digit code into the World City Trail app, and let GPS carry the routing through Mirabell Palace, the Mozart Residence and Salzburg Cathedral. The Last Song Quest works differently: a mobile code unlocks ten puzzles retelling the Von Trapp family's escape, weaving in the cathedral and the Do-Re-Mi steps, playable anytime and finishable in under two hours.
Practical. Salzburg runs close to 24C in July and 0C in January, with snow common enough in winter that the hilltop fortress views are worth checking against the forecast. A Mozartkugel from a bakery near Residenzplatz is the standard mid-walk treat. The old town is compact enough to finish either game on foot without a transit pass, though a funicular runs up to the fortress if the legs give out first. The Von Trapp quest reads best in daylight, when the film locations are easiest to match to the story.
