Self-Guided Tours in Vienna

Austria

Vienna's old town works as a loop around Stephansdom, whose tiled roof and spire anchor the skyline from almost every angle. The sightseeing route touches the University of Vienna, the ornate Anker Clock with its parade of historical figures at noon, Peterskirche's Baroque dome tucked behind bigger buildings, and the Hofburg complex where the Habsburgs ran an empire for centuries. Further round, the Naturhistorisches Museum faces Maria-Theresien-Platz, and the State Opera and the Albertina mark where the old imperial centre gives way to the Ringstrasse.

The two games couldn't be more different in spirit. Redeeming the sightseeing hunt just needs a code for the World City Trail app; GPS handles the rest, entirely outdoors with no entrance fees to plan around, and a spoken option at each of its stops. The spy mission drops the sightseeing framing entirely: a mobile access code unlocks fifteen clues built around a fictional secret order, sending you toward old performance halls and wartime hideouts tucked into otherwise ordinary squares, with no fixed start time.

Practical. Vienna runs close to 25C in July and 1C in January, cold enough that many cafés move indoors by October and stay that way until spring. A Sachertorte stop is the accepted break on the sightseeing route, and museums along the way, including the Albertina, typically close on Mondays. Wiener Linien covers trams, buses and the U-Bahn on one ticket, useful for reaching the spy mission's outer stops. Both games stay outdoors, so neither needs a museum ticket to finish.
