Atlantis The Palm opened in 2008 on the crescent of Palm Jumeirah, facing back down the trunk. It is less a hotel than a small town. Two towers hold roughly 1,500 rooms and are joined at the top by an arch.

What is inside

• The Lost Chambers. Halls and tunnels dressed as sunken ruins, wrapped around the central lagoon.
• Ambassador Lagoon. Eleven million litres behind a single window, with a handful of suites looking straight into it.
• Marine habitat. Some sixty-five thousand animals across the complex, plus dolphin and sea lion sessions run outdoors.
• Restaurants. Open to bookings from outside, and for several of them that is the reason people cross the Palm.

Atlantis The Royal opened next door in 2023, taller and separate. The waterpark on the same site has its own ticket. It is a different day out.

Seeing it without a room

Day passes for the beach and pools exist and cost less midweek. Aquarium tickets and animal encounters are sold at the door. Encounter slots go early.

What actually gets booked from here, though, is the view from outside.

• By boat. A ninety-minute speedboat run past the arch and on to the Burj Al Arab, and the cheapest of the three.
• By coach. A full-day city drive that stops here for the standard photograph.
• By air. A twelve-minute helicopter hop, several times the price of the boat.

Practical

• Crowds. Weekends and school holidays are the worst of it. A weekday in November or February is a different place.
• Arriving. The Palm Monorail runs from Gateway station to the door, and otherwise it is a taxi.
• Dress. Cover up once you are away from the pool and beach areas.
• Costs. Everything inside is priced as a resort, bottled water included.
• The arch shot. Ground level from the approach road works. The boat gives you the whole facade.
