Layover Tour in Amalfi

Update of 10 October 2026: Naples airport is open as usual, but it is due to close for runway works from 1 to 30 November 2026. Several airlines are moving their flights to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport, about 45 km from Amalfi by road, and others to Rome. Check which airport your ticket names before you plan a layover day on this coast.

A stopover in Amalfi is a road before it is a town. Naples Capodichino is the usual airport, some 74 km away by road, and the coast road is cut into the cliffs for most of its length. None of the tours in this category starts in Amalfi. All of them collect in Naples: the group vans pick up between 07:30 and 08:30 and are back about 17:30, while the private car runs to your schedule for up to eight hours. That asks a lot of a layover: land in the morning and fly out at night, or add a night in Naples.

No layover tour in Amalfi is timed to a flight: these are day trips from Naples, and nothing meets you at the airport. The private day is a car or minivan with an English-speaking driver for up to eight hours, fuel and tolls included, picked up at a hotel or an agreed point in Naples; extra hours cost a supplement. A guide in the towns costs extra too, as do lunch and tickets. The group day through Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi is listed at nine hours, with lunch included and about an hour free in each town. The coast-and-Ravello day is listed at eight; lunch, a short boat trip under the Amalfi cliffs and the Villa Rufolo gardens are optional extras there, and a live guide joins only from six passengers, while smaller parties get a driver.

Practical. Traffic is the variable: the private tour's own note warns that the coast road can be very busy in high season and suggests two main stops, such as Positano and Amalfi. Naples airport averages highs of 30C in July and 31C in August, so a summer day wants a hat; the vans run in rain, with an umbrella advised. From November to early February the sun sets before the vans reach Naples at 17:30, about 16:40 at midwinter. The private day is non-refundable inside 48 hours of the start, while the group days carry only the line “20 days before”, so read the tour page before you book.
