Multi-Day Tours in Rome

Multi-day tours in Rome are either days in the city or Rome as the first stop of a longer line. The city alone needs more than one day because the big sites are separate visits: the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's fill one, the Colosseum with the Forum and Palatine another, and the Appian Way with the catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano a third that one-day visitors lose. The line starts at Termini. South, Naples is about 70 minutes by high-speed train, with Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi coast beyond; Sorrento is some 280 km by road, three and a half hours. North, Florence is 90 minutes by train, with Siena and Chianti on the way.

The formats differ more than the length. Private two- and three-day programmes put a licensed guide and a driver on the city, and one small-group version covers the Colosseum, Vatican and catacombs over two days. The longer ones are packages with hotel nights, breakfast and guided days. Some are guaranteed departures with a shared guide, several are on request and are confirmed after you ask, and a few include the train legs. On e-bikes the city takes three days at 8 to 17 km a day, and five-day versions end in Chianti or around Assisi and Spello. Eight-day private routes run to Sorrento and Capri, or on to Florence, Venice and Milan, and a three-day private retreat is built around the thermal pools of Terme di Roma at Tivoli.

Practical. Hotel packages mostly take parties of two or three, with one bag each plus hand luggage, and city tax is paid on the spot. A private programme costs less per person as the party fills the car. Terms differ sharply: several two- and three-day city programmes are non-refundable once booked, while most hotel packages charge half from two to three weeks out and the full price inside six to nine days. April and October run 20 to 23C; July and August average about 32C.
