Things to do in Amsterdam

Amsterdam's centre is a ring of 17th-century canals, UNESCO-listed since 2010, dug in three concentric arcs around the old harbour. The Rijksmuseum holds Rembrandt's Night Watch; the Van Gogh Museum next door holds the largest Van Gogh collection anywhere. Anne Frank's hideout draws lines before opening.

• Coffeeshops vs cafés. A "coffeeshop" sells cannabis, not coffee; a "café" is a bar. The words are not interchangeable.
