Plan your trip to Amsterdam
Amsterdam's centre is a ring of 17th-century canals, UNESCO-listed since 2010, dug in three concentric arcs around the old harbour. The Rijksmuseum holds Rembrandt's Night Watch; the Van Gogh Museum next door holds the largest Van Gogh collection anywhere. Anne Frank's hideout draws lines before opening.
The quarters around the canals
- Jordaan. Former working quarter, now galleries and courtyard gardens behind the facades.
- Vondelpark. The city's main park, busy with cyclists and picnics from spring on.
- De Wallen. The oldest part of the city, canals and gabled houses alongside the Red Light District.
- Museum quarter. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk sit within a few minutes' walk of each other.
What people book here
Museum tickets lead the catalogue here. Self-guided mystery walks through the Jordaan and along the canals are close behind.
- Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. Both sell timed, reserved entry; walking up without one usually means a queue.
- Anne Frank House. Tickets release online weeks ahead and sell out fast.
- Canal cruise. The standard way to see the ring from the water, day or evening.
- Mystery walks. Self-guided games through the Jordaan and the old canals, phone-led.
Day trips from here
Three day trips cover most of the catalogue, all of them built around water, windmills or a castle.
- Zaanse Schans. Working windmills and a wooden village kept as an open-air museum.
- Kinderdijk. Nineteen windmills built around 1740 for a single polder's drainage, UNESCO-listed.
- Utrecht and De Haar Castle. A canal town and a heavily rebuilt 19th-century castle, paired on one day.
Practical
- Weather. Around 22C in July, 6C in January; wind off the water makes it feel colder than the number suggests, so layers beat one heavy coat.
- Getting around. Trams and the canals cover the centre; a bike does it fastest once you're used to the traffic.
- Booking ahead. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House all sell out days or weeks ahead in season.
- Coffeeshops vs cafés. A "coffeeshop" sells cannabis, not coffee; a "café" is a bar. The words are not interchangeable.
- Tipping. Service is part of the bill; a few euros on the table is a thank-you, not an obligation.
