Things to do in Vestland

30 experiences Norway

Plan your trip to Vestland

Vestland is Norway's fjord country, a county stitched together in 2020 from Sogn og Fjordane and Hordaland. Bergen sits at its southern edge. The fjords run north from there for hundreds of kilometres, and most are day trips, not a rushed detour.

The fjords themselves

Sognefjord is Norway's longest and deepest, running about 205 kilometres inland and dropping past 1,300 metres in places. Nærøyfjord branches off it. This arm narrows to about 250 metres and carries a UNESCO listing for the scenery, granted in 2005.

  • Hardangerfjord. The second-longest fjord, edged with fruit orchards that blossom pink and white in May.
  • Flåm Railway. One of the steepest standard-gauge lines in the world, climbing from sea level to Myrdal at 866 metres over twenty kilometres.
  • Stegastein. A viewpoint cantilevered 650 metres above Aurlandsfjord, reached by road above Aurland.

Getting between the pieces

Most visitors base themselves in Bergen, since driving between the fjord towns is slow on winding roads. "Norway in a Nutshell" solves that. It links train, ferry and bus into one day from Bergen through Voss, Flåm and Gudvangen and back.

  • By boat. Yacht and ferry cruises reach Flåm, Gudvangen and the smaller arms like Fyksesund and Mostraumen, often as a full day from Bergen.
  • By road. A rental car reaches Hardangerfjord's orchards and Rosendal in a couple of hours, with ferries filling in where bridges do not.

Practical

  • Weather. The coast stays mild, with summer highs near 18C and winter lows around 2C, while inland valleys drop well below freezing; daylight ranges from about eighteen hours in June to six in December.
  • Getting around. Bergen's airport connects to the fjords by bus, train or ferry; a rental car gives more freedom but adds tolls and ferry fares.
  • Season. Late spring brings the waterfalls at their fullest from snowmelt; some mountain roads and ferries close for winter.
  • Booking ahead. The Flåm Railway and the Nærøyfjord boats sell out on midsummer days; the shoulder seasons are easier.
  • Money. Norway runs on cards almost everywhere, even for a coffee at a remote fjord stop.
