Coimbra is built uphill from the Mondego river, and the climb is part of any self-guided walk here: from the Barbican Gate through the old Jewish quarter to the University of Coimbra at the summit, founded in 1290 and settled here for good in 1537, one of Europe's oldest. The Se Velha, the old cathedral, sits fortress-like partway up the hill, while the newer cathedral and the Machado de Castro museum, built over a Roman cryptoporticus, mark the upper town. At the top, the Paco das Escolas courtyard and the Minerva Stairs give the ceremonial approach students have climbed for graduation for centuries, past the Mosteiro de Santa Cruz where two of Portugal's first kings are buried.
A couple of games work this same climb. The World City Trail hunt is the longer route, roughly two hours across ten-plus stops from Praca do Comercio at the bottom to the university courtyards at the top, unlocked with a code, the route tracked on the app's map with a narrator's voice available for those who want it. Explorial's version covers similar ground with riddles and photo tasks racking up points, adding a stop most routes skip — the Jardim da Manga, a Renaissance cloister built as a fountain rather than a garden. Both run close to two hours and start whenever you are ready to begin the climb.
Practical. Coimbra sits inland enough to run hotter and drier than the Portuguese coast — summer afternoons regularly pass 30C, while winters stay mild but wet, often under 12C with real rain off and on. The hill between the river and the university is steep in places, so comfortable shoes matter more here than in the flat old towns further north. Both games' stops space out along that same slope, so pacing the climb rather than rushing it keeps the puzzles from feeling like an afterthought to the stairs. University terms bring the loudest crowds in October and again around graduation in spring, when black-caped students fill the same squares.
