Porto's centre packs onto a granite hillside above the Douro, and self-guided walks here move mostly uphill and down: from the blue-and-white azulejo tiles lining Sao Bento station, past the baroque Torre dos Clerigos, to the readers queuing outside Livraria Lello for a bookshop that inspired stories of its own. Down at the river, the Ribeira district's tall painted houses face the port-wine cellars across the water. A separate coastal route follows the Douro out to the Atlantic, past the Monumento aos Tripeiros and the small lighthouse chapel of Sao Miguel-o-Anjo, tracing the shoreline the poets Camoes and Ferreira de Castro once wrote about.
A handful of phone-led games cover the city, plus a couple of longer road trips that start from it. The World City Trail hunt is the standard city walk, roughly two hours between ten-plus stops unlocked by a ten-digit code, a voice track on request, pausing for a glass of Port by the river. Explorial covers the same granite streets in about two hours, riddles racking up a score; Questo sends players to the ocean side instead, following poets and old forts. Beyond the city, separate self-drive packages — one about a week, one closer to six days — head inland by hire car to Guimaraes, Peso da Regua, Penafiel and Sao Pedro do Sul, sleeping in hotels along the route rather than returning to Porto each night.
Practical. Porto is wetter than the rest of Portugal — autumn and winter bring real Atlantic rain, with daytime temperatures often under 14C, while summer stays warm and dry, typically near 27C. The granite streets around Clerigos and Lello get slippery when wet, worth minding on the steepest lanes to the river. Phone games need a charged battery and data for the full two hours; rural stretches of the self-drive routes lose signal, so downloading the day's map in Porto first is worth the minute it takes. Livraria Lello's queue builds fast after nine, so an early start beats the coach groups.
