Malaga self-guided routes follow a string of civilisations stacked into a few blocks near the port: a Roman theatre sits directly against the Alcazaba's Moorish walls on Calle Alcazabilla, the cathedral locals call la manquita, the one-armed lady, for the tower its builders never finished, and Picasso's birthplace looks onto the quiet Plaza de la Merced, with the church where he was baptised a street away. The old town is compact enough to link all of it, plus Malaga Park and the seafront at Playa la Malagueta, inside a single afternoon on foot, and Roman ruins keep turning up mid-street exactly where they were built.
A handful of phone-led games work this ground. The World City Trail scavenger hunt is the longest, roughly two hours across ten-plus stops from Plaza de la Merced to the university, buying a ten-digit code that unlocks GPS-guided directions, with a spoken track you can switch on at each stop. Explorial runs a similar two-hour hunt with riddles, photo tasks and a points system that turns the walk into a competition between whoever is playing. A separate Questo puzzle walk is shorter, just over an hour, built around Picasso's Malaga and leaning on hidden stories more than named sights. None needs a guide or a fixed start time — pause for a plate of espetos on the beach and pick the thread back up after.
Practical. Malaga's summers are dry and properly hot — July and August average highs near 31C, cooled only by the sea breeze along the Malagueta seafront — while winter stays mild for Europe, rarely below 12C by day. Battery drains faster in that heat, so a charged phone matters as much as sunscreen for the two-hour routes. The riddles at the Alcazaba and the cathedral sit in full sun for most of the day, so a morning start beats a midday one. Easter week and August fill the old town fastest.
