Self-Guided Tours in Valencia

Spain

Valencia's old town packs Gothic, Roman and modern layers into walking distance of each other: La Lonja de la Seda, the silk exchange whose trading hall earned it UNESCO status, sits across from the Central Market's iron-and-glass halls, while Roman foundations show through at Plaza de la Almoina beneath the cathedral that claims to hold the Holy Grail. The medieval city gate at Torres de Serranos marks where the walls once stood before the Turia river was diverted and its old bed turned into a park. Self-guided games here stay inside that historic core rather than crossing to the newer City of Arts and Sciences on the far side of the dry riverbed.

Valencia divides its games roughly the same way it divides its old town. The World City Trail walk is the longest: three hours between the bullring, the Central Market and the silk exchange, a code buys entry and the app leads the way on foot, a glass of horchata built into the plan. Separate Explorial routes then split by theme rather than territory — one built around the market halls and the ornate Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas, the other around the cathedral, the Torres de Serranos gate and the Roman layer beneath the old town, each around two hours of riddles and photo tasks scored against whoever else is playing. None of them needs a booking ahead or a group to join.

Practical. Valencia's summer is properly hot and dry, afternoons climbing past 30C from June onward with barely a cloud until evening; winter stays gentle for Spain, seldom dropping under 10C by day. Stone holds the day's heat into the evening, so the streets suit an early or late walk better than the middle of the day. Sunday closes the Central Market, so the food-themed stops lose their point that one day of the week. March brings Las Fallas, when the old town fills fastest and every walk slows to the pace of the crowd.
