Barcelona's self-guided routes split along the city's own fault lines: the tight Roman-and-medieval grid of the Gothic Quarter, the Modernisme trail up the Eixample where Gaudi's buildings sit blocks apart, and Montjuic, the hill fortress over the port. In the Gothic Quarter, puzzle games pass the thirteen white geese kept in the cathedral cloister, the Pont del Bisbe — a neo-Gothic bridge carved with a skull locals still spin ghost stories around — and the Roman tombs on Via Sepulcral Romana. The Modernisme route works differently: Casa Batllo's dragon-scale roof, Casa Mila's rippling stone front, and La Sagrada Familia, still unfinished more than a century after Gaudi began it.
The city has a wide spread of self-guided games, split by neighbourhood and mood. The World City Trail hunt is broadest, a three-hour loop past Placa de Catalunya, La Rambla and the Palau de la Musica, bought as a digital code, the app steering by GPS with a voice track you can toggle at each stop. Separate Explorial hunts cover the Gothic Quarter and the Modernisme buildings, both around two hours of riddles and photo tasks that rack up points between whoever is playing. Questo runs story quests on the same streets — a witch trial on Montjuic and a ghost hunt through the Gothic Quarter best played after dark — plus a shorter romantic version built for two. All start the moment you buy in and pause for however long a tapas stop takes.
Practical. Barcelona's summers are hot and humid near the water — July and August afternoons regularly reach 29C, with the Gothic Quarter's narrow streets holding shade but also trapping heat by evening. Winters stay mild, rarely under 8C. The ghost-themed quest is built for after dark, so a charged phone and a portable battery matter more than for the daytime hunts. Weekend afternoons around La Rambla and Sagrada Familia get dense with cruise-ship crowds by midday, so a morning start clears both the heat and the queues.
