Self-Guided Tours in San Sebastián

Spain

San Sebastian curls around La Concha Bay, and its self-guided routes stay in the compact grid between the beach and the Urumea river rather than climbing Monte Urgull behind the Old Town. Pintxos bars line the Old Town's narrow streets, and both games route through them on the way to the cathedral and the belle-epoque squares of Gipuzkoa and Cervantes Plaza. A second bridge over the Urumea, the Puente de Santa Catalina, connects that centre to the newer grid where the City Hall and post office headquarters sit — and the city's own name, after the martyred saint, gets its own moment in one of the games.

A couple of games split the same streets differently. The World City Trail hunt is the plainer of the two: a two-hour walk unlocked by a code, the app's GPS steering between ten-plus stops, narration on request, pausing for pintxos in the Old Town or a stretch by La Concha Beach along the way. The Questo quest wraps a toy maker's search for identity around the same district instead, guiding players by exact phone directions past the City Hall and the Puente de Santa Catalina while working through the saint's own story. It runs a little longer, close to ninety minutes, and one ticket per player is recommended even though several people can share a phone.

Practical. San Sebastian sits on the Atlantic side of Spain, cooler and wetter than the Mediterranean coast — summer afternoons average around 24C, and rain is possible even in August, so a light jacket is worth carrying regardless of season. Winters stay mild for the latitude, rarely under 8C, but the wind off the bay can make it feel colder on the seafront stretch. Pintxos bars fill fast after eight in the evening, so an earlier finish to either game leaves a better shot at a bar counter before the crowd. The film festival in September and summer weekends bring the densest crowds to the Old Town.
