Plan your trip to Quad Station

The quad stations sit in the desert behind Hurghada, twenty minutes inland from the hotels. They are the departure point for the most-sold excursion on this coast. Nothing here is a landmark.

What the trip actually is

A minibus collects you and drives out to the station. You get a briefing, a helmet and a machine. The convoy then follows a guide across flat stony desert.

  • Length. Three hours door to door is the standard, with about an hour of that on the quad.
  • The camp stop. Most routes pause at a Bedouin camp for tea, and often a camel ride.
  • Timing. Sunset runs are the popular ones. Morning departures are cooler and less crowded.

Variants

The same stations run buggies. They seat two and are steadier than a quad. Jeep safaris leave from the same place, go further out, and often end with dinner at the camp.

Practical

  • Dust. You will be covered in it. Wear old clothes and bring a scarf for your face.
  • Eyes. Goggles matter more than the helmet in a convoy. Ask for a pair if none is offered.
  • Licence. None is needed, but you steer and brake yourself. Say so if you have never ridden.
  • Children. Age limits vary by operator, and small children ride as passengers in buggies.
  • After dark. The desert cools fast once the sun goes. Take a layer on the sunset run.
