South Africa splits into a coast and a plateau, and the two barely feel like the same country. A short flight connects the two in two hours.

Coast, plateau and bush

• Western Cape. Cape Town, the Winelands and the coast toward Hermanus.
• Gauteng. Johannesburg and Pretoria, plus day safaris into the reserves north of both.
• Kruger region. Big Five country in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, a separate flight or a long drive from Johannesburg.
• KwaZulu-Natal. Durban's coast and the Drakensberg, usually a leg on its own.

What the country is for

Bush or coast, that is the first choice. Safari runs two ways here: big public parks, or small private reserves with sightings packed into a single morning drive. The Cape works a calmer register too, all vineyards and tasting rooms in old farmhouses around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Whales pass close to shore off Hermanus. The season runs roughly June to November. African penguins nest on a suburban beach near Cape Town, and great white sharks draw cage-diving boats out of Gansbaai.

History sits alongside all of it. Robben Island and the townships are part of what most visitors go looking for, not a detour from it.

Practical

• Weather. Cape Town runs the reverse of the rest of the country: dry, sunny summers (21-26C, November-March) and its rain in winter (10-18C, June-August). Inland and on safari, October-March is hot with afternoon storms, and May-September is dry, cooler at night and the better season for game viewing.
• Getting between regions. Cape Town to Johannesburg is a flight of about two hours. Driving the same route takes the better part of two days, so most itineraries fly rather than self-drive between coast and bush.
• Money and tipping. Cards work almost everywhere; keep some rand for small vendors and parking guards. Ten percent is the usual restaurant tip, and safari guides are tipped separately, per day of the trip.
• Malaria. The Cape has none. Low-lying parts of the Kruger region carry a seasonal risk, worth a call to a travel clinic before booking that leg.
