Transfers in Spain are mostly long ones, because the cities are far apart. The shortest are the airport runs in Madrid and Barcelona, listed at 35 minutes. Between cities the offer is built around Barcelona: Tarragona is a 90-minute hop, Valencia three and a half hours, Madrid or Bilbao six and a half. Beyond Spain it carries on to Montpellier, Toulouse and Marseille, from San Sebastián to Bordeaux, and from Seville, Madrid and Santiago de Compostela to Lisbon. Where a high-speed line runs, the train is faster; the car earns its fare door to door, with luggage, or where no station fits.

Nearly all Spain transfers tours are private and priced per vehicle, not per seat. A sedan, MPV or van is sent to match the party, up to seven people on most legs and fourteen on two of the Lisbon runs. Many routes are sold twice, direct or with a two-hour stop, and most listings name the stop. Zaragoza's Basílica del Pilar, begun in 1681, is the stop between Barcelona and both Madrid and Bilbao. Pamplona's star-shaped citadel, ordered by Philip II in 1571, interrupts the drive from San Sebastián. Practical. After booking, message the pick-up address and time; most legs stop selling 24 hours ahead, and cancelling inside 24 hours costs the full fare. Most listings say child seats are not supplied, while Spanish rules require an approved seat for children up to 135 cm, so bring your own. Carry a passport or ID card on the French and Portuguese legs, and remember that Portugal's clocks run an hour behind Spain's. Roads are busiest around the start of August, the 15 August holiday and the last weekend of the month, so the long legs go early.
