Outdoor life around Dubai begins with sand, and the sand starts closer than most people assume: forty-five minutes past Sheikh Zayed Road the towers give out and protected desert takes over, holding Arabian oryx, sand gazelles and some 120 bird species. When booking, ask whether hotel pick-up is included and how long the transfer takes; the drive out often adds an hour each way. Dune bashing is usually closed to pregnant travellers, small children and anyone with back or neck trouble; camel rides, camp dinners and Hatta hiking stay open.
