Georgia suits families better than its mountain reputation suggests, mostly because the distances are forgiving and the food is not a negotiation. The winter half is Gudauri, where the ski school runs children's lessons with their own instructors and its own gentle ground, separate from the adult slopes. The summer and shoulder half is the day trip: the Military Highway north takes in the Ananuri fortress, the Zhinvali reservoir and the pass at Gudauri, and turns round at Kazbegi under the mountain, which is about as much driving as a young child tolerates in one go. Everything else follows from Georgian attitudes rather than infrastructure. Children are welcome in restaurants at any hour and nobody treats a loud table as a problem, khinkali and khachapuri are eaten with hands by design, and the standard dishes carry no chilli at all.

Lessons are bought by the hour or the day, with equipment hired at the base so nothing travels from home, and a private instructor for a small child is not the extravagance it is in the Alps. Sightseeing days come as a fixed group departure or as a private car, and with children the second is usually worth it: the same route can be shortened, the stops cut, and lunch taken when it is needed rather than when the schedule says. Longer family circuits string Tbilisi together with Kakheti and the coast at a slower pace than the standard itineraries.

Practical. Gudauri starts above two thousand metres and the lifts go considerably higher, so the first day is better taken short — altitude affects small children faster than adults, and so does the sun on snow. Group day tours to Kazbegi run ten hours or more door to door. Museum and monastery entry is usually free for young children, though the ticket desk may not volunteer it. Car seats have to be requested at the time of booking. The walk up to Gergeti Trinity is too long for small legs; the vehicle transfer is the sensible version.
